Faki calls for justice in Mozambique post-election deaths

African Union Commission Chair Moussa Faki has condemned the post-election violence in Mozambique that led to the deaths of lawyer Elvino Dias and PODEMOS party official Paulo Guambe.

Both were killed amid rising tensions following Mozambique’s general elections held on October 9.

In a statement on Monday, October 21, Faki expressed condolences to the families of the victims and called for calm while urging Mozambican authorities to investigate the killings and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

 “I call on security authorities to undertake the necessary investigation and bring the perpetrators to justice,” said Faki.

He further urged political actors and their supporters to remain peaceful and respect due process as the country awaits the final election results.

Faki noted the African Union had deployed an election observer mission to monitor the elections, underscoring the importance of stability during this sensitive period.

The commission said it is closely monitoring the situation, particularly the rising incidents of violence, and called on all parties to prioritise peace and stability.

The elections have drawn widespread attention, with local and international observers keeping a watchful eye on developments in the Southern African nation.
