Gabriel Adero's journey to becoming a Kenya Cup champion with Kabras Sugar is nothing short of a fairytale in Kenyan rugby.
The former Kenya U20 captain, who recently switched from Strathmore Leos to Kabras, has made an indelible mark in the annals of his new club, propelling them to a historic Kenya Cup victory.
Adero’s move to Kabras Sugar was fueled by more than just ambition; it was a homecoming of sorts. After completing his studies at Strathmore University, he chose to return to Western, drawn by Kabras’ strong reputation and commitment to excellence.
“I was attracted to the club's values and their dedication to developing players both on and off the field,” Adero explained. This sentiment resonated with him deeply, having known many of the Kabras players since his high school days at St. Peter's Mumias.
The transition to Kabras wasn't seamless. Starting off as a substitute prop against Homeboyz in January at Jamhuri Grounds, he faced stiff competition from more experienced players.

However, his versatility shone through as he made several appearances for the ESS side before another game-changing substitute appearance, this time as a back row against Menengai Oilers.
A critical moment came when an injury to Jeanson Misoga during the last match of the regular season against KCB presented Adero with an unexpected opportunity.
He seized it with both hands, starting in the semi-finals and final, playing a pivotal role in securing back-to-back Kenya Cup titles for Kabras, both unbeaten.
Reflecting on his early days at Kabras and the position battle, Adero shared, “Joining the club as a prop was quite a challenge... I focused on staying positive and motivated until I was given a chance to play my primary position as a back-row in the finals.” His patience and dedication paid off spectacularly.
For Adero, winning the Kenya Cup was a profound achievement. “Winning the Kenya Cup title after just a few months at the club means the world to me as a player. It’s a dream come true and a moment I will always cherish in my rugby career,” he remarked with a sense of pride and joy.
Beyond the personal glory and the thrill of victory, the Kenya Cup medal represents more than just a triumph; it is a testament to Adero’s hard work, resilience, and unyielding spirit.
His journey reflects a deeper narrative prevalent in sports—of overcoming obstacles and making the most of every opportunity presented.
Looking ahead, Adero has set his sights on further glory. “My main goal is to win more Kenya Cup trophies with the club and even advance to represent the club in the National team set-up,” he stated ambitiously.
He also hopes to establish himself as one of the premier impact players in the league.
Gabriel Adero’s story is not just about a rugby player making it big; it's about a young man who took a chance on a move that many might have seen as a step into the unknown and turned it into a stepping stone for greater achievements.
His narrative is a source of inspiration not only to his teammates and peers but to aspiring rugby players across Kenya and beyond.
As Kabras Sugar continues to build on their legacy in Kenyan rugby, they do so with players like Adero, who are not only skilled on the field but are also imbued with a profound understanding of what it takes to be champions.
