Doctors at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) have ended their strike after reaching a deal with the hospital administration.

The strike, which began on February 5, had paralysed healthcare services at the facility.

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) said on Tuesday, February 11, doctors had resumed work after securing commitments on contract terms, promotions and salary arrears.

“Doctors on contract terms for over a year will be moved to permanent and pensionable terms by April 30,” said the agreement.

The hospital also agreed to stop hiring doctors on contract terms.

Promotions for eligible doctors will be processed immediately following interviews set for February 11 and 12, with implementation in the February pay slip.

Salary arrears from the 2020 Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) job evaluation will be reviewed, with a joint committee expected to submit a plan within 60 days.

The agreement also directed the hospital to remit pending third-party deductions by April 30 and cover penalties arising from delays.

The strike had disrupted key medical services, forcing patients to seek alternatives.

KMPDU had warned of prolonged action if the grievances were not addressed.
