Peter Okondo, the former Cabinet Minister in President Moi government was a smart chap. Besides his loose tongue whose consequences he ended up regretting, he scared the colonial government when he came back from South Africa with a university degree in accounting. He had bagged a first class honours. He was the first Kenyan professional accountant. When the colonial government rejected him for being overqualified, he also rejected any job that would earn him less than KES 700 per month. The man from Busia elected to employ himself.
