Defence CS promises to prioritise KDF welfare

Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya has reiterated the ministry's commitment to prioritise the welfare of Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) personnel and their families.

Tuya made these remarks on Monday during celebrations to mark the 13th Kenya Defence Forces Day at Thika Garrison, Kiambu county.

“We are dedicated to ensuring that both our serving personnel and the families of our fallen heroes are well taken care of. Our commitment is demonstrated through a wide range of support programmes, from comprehensive healthcare services to ="https://www.standardmedia.co.ke/health/national/article/2001499565/president-ruto-announces-major-appointments-and-promotions-in-kdf">financial empowerment< initiatives and educational benefits,” she said.

The CS further highlighted the ministry's continued support to families of fallen soldiers through pension, scholarships for children and psycho-social programmes.

“These initiatives help families navigate their loss and maintain resilience,” she said.

She said the military's tradition is to ="https://www.standardmedia.co.ke/article/2001473138/boost-for-kdf-welfare-as-veterans-advisory-committee-is-launched">honour the brave heroes< who laid down their lives for the country.

"Behind each fallen soldier is a great story, a grieving family, and a resilient community that takes pride in the legacy they left behind. The whole of Kenya shares your pain and salutes your strength,” said Tuya.

The CS also praised the KDF for their efforts in fighting banditry in the North Rift and response to disasters like floods.

"KDF remains steadfast in protecting Kenya and enhancing the well-being of the nation," she said.

Chief of Defence Forces General Charles Kahariri said that the KDF Day, themed “One Force, Mission Ready: Unity in Action for National Security and Development,” is a solemn occasion to honour the sacrifices made by Kenyan soldiers.

“KDF Day serves as a reminder that the efforts and sacrifices, especially of those who make the ultimate sacrifice in service to our great nation, shall never be forgotten,” said Gen Kahariri. 

The CDF affirmed that KDF is always mission ready and acknowledged the government for supporting the military.

"We remain mission ready, thanks to the backing of the Commander-in-Chief and the government, which continue to provide the resources we need," he assured.

During the celebrations, the military launched a book titled, “Defenders of the Nation” which documents KDF's history, from the King's African Rifles to the modern, agile African force it is today.

Brigadier Stephen Huria, commander of the Artillery Brigade, highlighted that the book celebrates the evolution, trials, and contributions of the men and women who have defended Kenya’s borders and patrolled its waters.

“It tells the stories of our services, from heroism during the Shifta campaign to our unwavering commitment to peacekeeping missions and humanitarian efforts. This book is a tribute to the highest ideals of service,” said Brig Huria.

The event saw the unveiling of a monument in honour of fallen soldiers.

In attendance were Defence PS Patrick Mariru, Inspector General Douglas Kanja, service commanders, and retired generals, led by former Chief of General Staff Jeremiah Kianga.
