Two more Mpox Cases confirmed in Kenya

The two latest Mpox cases are reported in Kericho and Taita Taveta counties.

The Ministry of Health has confirmed two new Mpox cases, bringing the total number of infections to 33 since the outbreak began.

Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni announced on Friday, January 17 that the latest cases were reported in Kericho and Taita Taveta counties.

Mpox cases have now been detected in 12 counties: Nakuru (10), Mombasa (8), Nairobi (2), Kajiado (2), Bungoma (2), Taita Taveta (2), and Kericho (2).

Busia, Makueni, Kilifi, Kiambu, and Uasin Gishu have each reported one case since the outbreak was first identified on July 31, 2024.

Health officials have identified at least 255 contacts, of which 216 were monitored for the recommended 21-day observation period. Nine contacts have since tested positive.

The Ministry has also screened over 2.9 million travelers at points of entry, identifying suspected cases for further investigation.

A total of 379 samples have been tested at the National Public Health Laboratory (NPHL) and partner facilities nationwide.

As schools reopen, the Ministry has expressed concern over the potential spread of Mpox among students, citing their underdeveloped immunity.

Muthoni urged school administrations to strengthen health education and implement preventive measures to curb infections.

Schools are advised to promote hygiene and sanitation, train personnel to identify symptoms and ensure classrooms are well-ventilated.
