A new initiative seeks to boost the reading culture among children by challenging them to read 25 books in 90 days.

The campaign, dubbed ‘Mashujaa Wa Kusoma,’ is led by EdTech startup BookSmart, a company focusing on providing tailored educational resources and tools to enhance student performance.

The challenge, which began on Monday, July 15, targets young readers aged 3 to 12.

Participants are required to complete the reading challenge by reading 25 books between Monday, July 15, and Saturday, October 12.

The campaign is available in Nairobi, Nakuru, Kisumu and Mombasa.

Children who meet the goal will receive a gift hamper with top reader in each region will win a grand prize.

BookSmart’s app allows children to access books online or offline, offering interactive stories, personalised recommendations and progress tracking.

The digital approach helps provide a broad library of books in various languages to children in remote areas.

Olivia Kimani, Director of Partnerships and Services at Worldreader Kenya, said, “BookSmart is helping us close the literacy gap by giving children across Kenya access to high-quality reading materials. Through campaigns like Mashujaa Wa Kusoma, we’re providing exciting reading experiences and rewarding dedication.”

The campaign also offers over 2,700 free books in English and Kiswahili and has set up WhatsApp book clubs to support and track children’s reading progress.
