Newly appointed Harambee Stars head coach ="https://www.standardmedia.co.ke/business/amp/football/article/2001512852/who-is-benni-mccarthy">Benni McCarthy< led his first training session on March 12, 2025, marking the start of preparations for Kenya's crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification matches against Gambia and Gabon.
McCarthy made headlines on March 11 when he unveiled his provisional squad, which includes exciting new talents such as Kelly Madada and Andreas Odhiambo, along with midfielder William Lenkupae, who earns his first call-up while playing in Australia.
Following the initial practice, McCarthy shared his enthusiasm about the talent in the squad. He noted the valuable experience for the young players and the opportunity for them to showcase their skills.
"It was nice for me to get to know them better and for them to understand my coaching style," McCarthy remarked.
While acknowledging the players' initial nervousness, he expressed satisfaction with their performance during the first session.

“They acquitted themselves well and adapted to what I wanted. There’s some good quality in the squad that pleasantly surprised me,” he said.
Despite the enthusiasm, McCarthy indicated that the squad would not reach full strength immediately. Key players from Gor Mahia and Tusker FC will miss the sessions due to club commitments, an arrangement made with the federation.
With the absence of some crucial players, McCarthy reaffirmed his commitment to preparing a dedicated team for the upcoming matches. He stressed the significance of the upcoming clash against Gambia scheduled for March 20, saying the team would give their opponents a hard time, with a hardworking team that plays well and is focused on winning.
Kenya’s first challenge awaits at Stade Allasane Ouattara in Ivory Coast, where they will face Gambia. The match is seen as pivotal for securing valuable points in their 2026 World Cup qualification campaign. Just days later, on March 23, the squad will return home to take on Gabon at Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi, with kick-off set for 4 PM.
