Gicheru and Nyachera win Coast Junior tournament

It was the last weekend before kids go back to school after the April holidays and they made sure it was indeed memorable by displaying their skills at the par 71 Sea-Link Mombasa golf course in Mombasa County.
The over 100 juniors drawn from across the country with handicap limits of 28.0 for boys and 36.0 for girls braved the current rainy and sunny weather for three days’ battling to claim honours in the third NCBA Coast Junior Open that started from last Friday and ended on Sunday.
Royal Nairobi Club’s Mwathi Gicheru and Britney Nyachera of Windsor Golf and Hotel Club emerged the overall boy and girl winners.
Gicheru carded 75,76 and 77 for a total of 222 gross while Nyachera played 91,88 and 89 for a total 268 gross to clinch the overall titles.
“It’s so exciting to win this tournament and am going back to school a happy boy but will definitely defend the title next time,” said Gicheru.

“I owe much gratitude to my parents and the club for their support and all of us are really excited for this success. I promise not to let them down,” said Nyachera.
Golf Park’s Kevin Anyien collected a total of 249 gross from 83,83, and 83 to win the 19 to 21 years’ category title for the boys with Aaron Mutisya of Nyali Golf and Country on score of 296 gross from 100,111 and 85 taking the runners up slot.
The 16 to 21 years’ section was dominated by Makasi Grace from Nyali after playing 98,100 and 99 for a total of 297 and her club mate Rasmeet Kaur who brought 300 gross from 102,111 and 87.
Sigona’s Hetansh Shah with 247 gross from 81,83 and 83 and Gicheru Kimani of Royal Nairobi who had a score of 249 gross from 83,80 and 86 were the boy and girl winners in the 16 to 18 years of age.
Elsewhere at the par-73 Kitale Golf Club course, Golf Park’s Josphat Rono registered his maiden Trans Nzoia Open victory with an impressive total of one-over-par 220 gross after carding 75, 69, and 76 gross on the final day on Sunday.
“This means so much to me. I have been working hard on my game and to finally win a big event like the Trans Nzoia Open is a dream come true. The conditions were tough but I stayed patient, especially during the final round,” said Rono.
Kenya Railways Isaac Makokha was the runners up on a total of 222 gross from 73,76 and 73.
Others among the top ten and ties were Golf Park’s Sammy Mulama-226 gross, Kisii’s Geoffrey Karioki -228 gross, Eldoret’s Kenneth Serem-229 gross, Muthaiga’s Eugine Wafula of Muthaiga-230 gross, Golf park’s Raphael Leming’ani-230 gross, Nandi Bears Elly Barno from Nandi Bears-231 gross, Kitale’s Wilson Wafula-232 gross.
In Nanyuki handicap 13 James Warui emerged the overall winner of the Heritage Insurance golf day with 42 points after beating a team of 76 players.
Cyprian Bundi playing off handicap 3 was the men’s winner with 37 points while handicap 18 Patrick Ekwam with 36 points was the runners up.
Handicap 15 Purity Githui was the best lady on 31 points beating handicap 25 Muthoni Mwangi to the runners up slot.
