Intern doctors will find out their posting locations on Wednesday, April 30, when the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) conducts a national balloting exercise.

The council said each graduate will receive their individual results immediately after the process.

The Ministry of Health will get the full list by Friday, May 2.

The results will determine where hundreds of medical pre-interns will be posted. The placements are set to begin on Tuesday, July 1.

This comes after a deal between the government and healthcare workers late last year averted a nationwide strike that had been planned for December 22.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki brokered the agreement with the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU).

“The government values the expertise, sacrifice and patriotic input of all our health workers. The health of every Kenyan is a priority for the Kenya Kwanza administration,” said Kindiki.

As part of the deal, intern doctors will now earn Sh206,000 a month, in line with the 2017 Collective Bargaining Agreement.

This is a sharp increase from the Sh40,000 to Sh70,000 monthly pay earlier proposed by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission.

The government also committed to paying Sh1.75 billion in salary arrears immediately, with the remaining balance expected to be cleared by July.

Earlier this month, the KMPDU led protests in Nairobi, with doctors marching to the Ministry of Health, Parliament and the Social Health Authority.

They warned of a possible strike if intern doctors were left out of the agreement.
