The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has opened Hola-Garissa-Nairobi highway to traffic after restoration works following wash out by floods.

KeNHA restored the road after it collapsed at Kona Punda along the Madogo-Mororo stretch.

The roads agency announced completion of the works yesterday and opened the road to traffic.

In a statement, KeNHA said that the road was safe for traffic flow two weeks after it washed away blocking movement to Garissa town from Nairobi, Mombasa, and Tana River counties.

Floods submerged Mororo, Madogo Adelle, Ziwani, and Bakuyu villaged in Tana River forcing residents to move to camps in Bulabaraka, Madogo.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is expected to inspect the road on Monday and later visit displacement camps in Ziwani, Bakayu and Bulabaraka.

Residents of Madogo and workers mostly doing manual jobs in Garissa town have been going without some essential commodities after the road was rendered impassable.

However, KeNHA said its team will remain in the area to monitor and alert residents and leaders of any development to ensure seamless connectivity along the entire stretch.
