Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga has faulted the government over the introduction of new charges on national Identification Cards and passports.

Speaking in Westlands, Nairobi on Wednesday, November 15, Odinga said it is wrong for the government to demand fees for something that ought to be issued for free.

“How can someone charge you for being a Kenyan? Those Identification cards should be issued with or without the money,” said Odinga.

The Azimio chief says he will challenge the government’s decision, in a bid to absolve Kenyans of exorbitant fees.

His remarks come a day after the ="https://www.standardmedia.co.ke/national/article/2001485371/government-backtracks-on-proposed-fees-on-id-and-passports">State revoked a gazette notice< with the proposal to increase the application fees for Identity Cards, passports, and birth and death certificates.

Initially, it would cost one Sh2,000 to replace a lost ID card and Sh1,000 for new registrations

Replacing a lost passport would cost you up to Sh20,000, compared to Sh12,000 which is what the Immigration department currently charges.

A 50-page diplomatic passport would have seen one spend Sh15,000, double the price of the previous fee.

Kindiki on Tuesday however said that the suspension will allow the government to collect more views from the public on the increase of the charges.

“The State Department for Immigration and Citizen Services has been directed to conduct and complete public participation as soon as possible, but in any case, not later than December 10.”
