A Nakuru businessman spent the night in police custody following the death of a college student with whom they were on a drinking spree.

The body of 22-year-old Eileen Cherotich was recovered along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway on Sunday morning after a night of merrymaking within Nakuru City.

“The incident is said to have happened at around 3:20 am on Sunday. The student was in the company of five other people on board a private car,” said Nakuru West DCIO Charles Kamau.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Cherotich succumbed to injuries sustained after a fall from the vehicle, which was being driven at a high speed.

“It is said that Cherotich argued with her alleged lover, who is a businessman. It is unclear how she found herself outside the vehicle. Whether she was thrown out or jumped off, it is a matter still under investigation,” he said.

Cherotich’s last movements outside Rift Valley Institute of Science and Technology (RVIST) helped pin suspects who are said to have picked her for the drinking spree.

She joined ="https://www.standardmedia.co.ke/article/2000122993/riots-in-nakuru-after-first-year-student-raped">the polytechnic< in 2021 and was pursuing Human Resource Management.

Angry students from the National Polytechnic stormed the business premises of the prime suspect and destroyed his property, forcing him to flee.

The suspect surrendered himself to the police for his safety, while another female student who had accompanied the deceased was arrested separately.

“We have two persons of interest in custody helping us with investigations. Three others are still on the run. We also impounded the vehicle they were using,” said Mr Kamau.

Kiprotich Langat, the students' president at RVIST said that they would fight for justice for their colleague.

“We are looking up to the police to ensure justice for Cherotich is served. Unfortunately, she has died under these circumstances,” said Kiprotich.

He said the residential area near the polytechnic has seen a proliferation of businesses selling alcohol, which has led to increased student consumption of alcoholic beverages.

“We want the government to vet the bars, wines and spirits dealers here. Most of them operate without licenses while others operate beyond the allowed time,” he said.

The students reported a concerning trend of older men exploiting female students from humble backgrounds. These men use their wealth and influence to take advantage of the younger women.
