A 28-year-old warden at Kitale Women's Prison who had been missing for three days was found dead inside her rented house.

The decomposing body of Linda Machuma Wafula was discovered in the house on the outskirts of Kitale town.

Police officers were forced to break the door to gain access to the house.

"This distressing incident adds to the grim statistic of three prison officers who have succumbed to suicide in the past two years," said Trans Nzoia County Criminal Investigations Officer Francis Kihara.

Village elder Judith Wafula said there was a stench emanating from her rental house that prompted neighbours to inform the police.

Despite being described by neighbours as a cheerful person, Wafula's tragic end is testament to the hidden mental health struggles officers face in their line of duty.

Kihara urged officers to seek counseling when grappling with mental health challenges.

"It is crucial for officers to prioritise their well-being and not resort to such drastic measures," he said.

Wafula's body was taken to Cherang'any Nursing Home.

In 2021, Julius Kipchumba Too, another prison warden attached to Kitale Medium Prison, was found dead in his rented house.

The warden reported to work before he sneaked out with his G3 gun which he used to end his life.
