National hockey girls’ champions Tigoi Girls from Western ran over Bweranyangi from Uganda 9-0 to begin the East Africa school games on a high note at Musingu High School hockey grounds on Thursday in Kakamega.

Diana Namachanja and Phily Lavender each scored four goals to lead Tigoi to victory as Tracy Ilusa sealed the win.

Lavender converted a 10th-minute penalty corner to hand Tigoi a narrow 1-0 first-quarter lead before Ilusa made it 2-0 at the beginning of the second quarter.

Namachanja made it 3-0 in the 19th minute as the match slipped away from the Ugandans.

Lavender and Namachanja returned to the score sheet to complete their braces as Tigoi took a commanding 5-0 half time lead.

In the final half, the duo returned again, this time both adding two goals each to win 9-0.

At the same time, defending champions St Joseph Girls Kitale on the other hand were held to a 0-0 draw by debutants Ng’iya Girls.

In boys’ hockey, St Anthony’s Kitale narrowly saw off Mpesa Academy 2-1. Kelvin Onyango and Collins Kimtai netted for the Rift Valley heavyweights while Howard Marte scored Mpesa’s consolation.

Musingu School were stunned 1-0 by Kakunglu from Uganda. Aaron Opio scored in the 50th minute to stun the Kenyan champions.
