With the conclusion of the World Rally Championships (WRC) Safari Rally over the weekend, local drivers equally stamped their authority irrespective of the quality of their rallying machines.

Five-time champion Carl ‘Flash’ Tundo and Jeremiah Wahome finished in respectable positions by their own standards which allowed them to earn points for the Africa Rally Championships (ARC) and Kenya National Rally Championships (KNRC) series.

While driving a Ford Fiesta R5 and competing in Rally 2 of the WRC event, Tundo clocked 5.23.02.2 to finish 15th in overall standings ahead of Wahome, who was placed 16th in 5.41.53.1 (A1).

As a result, Tundo topped the ARC standings as defending champion Karan Patel dropped to the sixth spot.

Navigated by Tim Jessop in a Ford Fiesta R5, Tundo led the ARC category but finished seventh in Rally 2, the second division of WRC championships.

Polish driver Kajetan Kajetanowicz won Rally 2 in a Toyota GR Yaris.

By finishing runner-up behind Tundo, Wahome (Jeremiah) beat the reigning KNRC champion Samman Vohra who place 20nd in overall standings.

Ugandan star Yasin Nasser, who competed on a Tanzanian licence is placed fourth in the ARC category and was placed 23rd in overall standings ahead of Hamza Anwar who finished 24th.

Anwar managed to rectify mechanical problems that his Ford Fiesta faced to make a comeback on Super Rally.

“I had lots of challenges with this car but I’m happy to have rectified them to make a comeback and finished the rally,” he said. [Ben Ahenda]
