Former Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Commissioner General Michael Waweru passed away on Saturday, July 6.

His death was confirmed by KRA’s chairperson, Anthony Mwaura.

Although the cause of his death is unclear, Mwaura described Waweru as a pivotal figure in transforming the tax culture in Kenya.

“We at KRA offer our deepest condolences to the family of Dr. Michael Waweru, former KRA Commissioner General, following his passing. Dr. Waweru’s years of service were marked by significant contributions to sustainable economic progress through enhanced revenue collection - a legacy that will forever be remembered,” read the statement.

Until his death, Waweru served as the East Africa Cables Board Chairman, a position he held for seven years.

At KRA, he served for nine years, from 2003 until his retirement in 2012.

Waweru will be remembered as a transformative leader who spearheaded a period of significant growth in tax collection, tripling revenue from Sh183 billion in 2002 to over Sh630 billion in 2011.
