Nyanza Region rugby 15s champions Kisii School reminded their rivals that they are still the team to beat after edging out newly crowned Kisumu County champions Nyabondo High School 17-7 yesterday in Migori.

Kisii, who are the back-to-back rugby champions, made light work of Nyabondo to lead Group A which also has Gekano and Rapogi Boys.

Former champions St Mary’s School Yala at the same time hammered Cardinal Otunga from Kisii 35-5 to send a statement in Group B.

“We are taking it a game at a time this year. We know our quality and our goal remains the same, to get to the finals,” said George Kerima, Yala rugby coach.

Other results saw Agoro Sare edge Anjego 12-8 while Rapogi pulled a 6-5 comeback win over Gekano.

In girls' hockey, last year semifinalists Ng’iya Girls carried their Siaya County games momentum to the regionals after hammering Anjego 8-0 and Huma from Kisumu 5-0 in their opening two matches.

The two wins propelled the Siaya champions to the semis with a game to spare as they prepare to face Amaiko in their final match.

“We have been warming up for the knock out stages. We were using these preliminary matches to sharpen our skills and rectify some of the mistakes we witnessed at the county finals,” said Ng’iya Girls hockey coach Edwin Ogony.

Other results saw Mbita edge out Cradinal 4-0 and draw 1-1 with Pe Hill

In handball, newbies Ojijo Oteko from Homa Bay saw off Nyakach Girls from Kisumu 20-18 to continue their rise while St Mary’s School Yala recovered from their opening day 25-23 defeat at the hands of defending champions Manyatta to edge Kisii School 34-17.

In basketball, Nyakach Girls hammered Kadika 77-28 while Tuk Jowi saw of Kereri Girls 46-18.

Defending champions Agoro Sare on the other hand schooled Migori Boys 82-60 while Maseno edged out Rapogi 47-39.
