Travellers on the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) can now access a first-class travel experience following the launch of Kenya Railways’ KR Premium Class service, which promises to revolutionise rail transport in the country.
With fully reclinable seats, complimentary meals and beverages and high-speed Wi-Fi, passengers can expect luxury at Sh12,000 one-way or Sh20,000 for a return trip.
“This exclusive Premium Class service offers a world-class rail experience and elevates travel standards for our passengers,” said Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir during the recent unveiling of the SGR Nairobi Terminus.
At the same time, Chirchir opened seven new Nairobi Commuter Rail (NCR) stations along the Nairobi-Ruiru route, part of the government’s plan to commission 32 new stations to improve city-wide commuter capacity.
The newly launched stations, including Ruiru, Githurai and Dandora, will help ease congestion and make commuting more efficient for thousands of Nairobi residents.
“This marks a major step in making commuting safer and more convenient,” observed Chirchir, noting that the NCR service aims to transport 100,000 passengers daily by the end of the 2024/2025 financial year, up from the current 20,000.
Chirchir also revealed that the World Bank and the French government have committed financial support to the expansion project, which is expected to significantly impact the city’s public transport infrastructure.
Kenya Railways Chairman Abdi Bare Duale and Managing Director Philip Mainga attended the event alongside other government officials.
