Preparations for the burial of the late Mama Anne Nanyama, the mother of National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, are complete.
President William Ruto, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and other top government officials are expected to attend the burial.
There was a somber mood Thursday during the requiem mass of Mama Nanyama at her home in Mukweya Village in Bungoma county.
The procession from Life Care Hospital brought Bungoma town to a standstill as residents came out in their numbers to bid her farewell.
Wetang’ula was overwhelmed by emotions as he paid tribute to his mother.
In an emotional tribute, the Speaker expressed the indescribable pain of losing a mother, describing it as a wound that remains permanent and inexpressible.
He reflected on the overwhelming challenge of starting the New Year without the love, words of hope, encouragement, and prayers from Mama Nanyama Wetang'ula.
Wetangula conveyed the family's deep sense of loss, but also expressed gratitude to God for the 94 years granted to their late matriarch.
"I will forever hold your acts of love in my heart, mum," Wetangula said, recalling the lasting impact his mother had on him and the family.
The mass, which was attended by national and local leaders, friends, family, and well-wishers, was officiated by Bishop Juma of the Catholic Diocese of kitale
Bishop Juma led mourners in prayers and urged the Wetangula family to ensure that their mother's legacy of love, kindness, and service to others lives on for generations.
Mama Nanyama Wetang'ula will be laid to rest on January 3, 2024.
The Speaker called on mourners to join the family in honoring the memory of their beloved matriarch.
Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi eulogized his mother as a strict disciplinarian who was passionate about education of her children and the society at large.
"My mom brewed and sold busaa and chang'aa for us to go through school whenever school fees was a challenge, that is how dedicated she was to seeing us succeed in our education," said Wanyonyi.

Mama Nanyama, was born on March 9, 1930, in the Babuya clan from Sirare Village.
She died on December 27, 2024 at the age of 94.
