ACK archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit has said that the church has received the news of aid cut by the United states of America 47th President Donald Trump with shock and sadness.
Sapit said that the executive orders signed by Trump bringing to a halt aid to Africa and subsequent recall of the staff is regrettable.
“Some of this executive orders are basically a shutdown to sick people and an example is the funds associated with mitigating the effects or taming AIDs and HIV, this is nothing else other than shutting down sick people.”Ole Sapit said.
Ole Sapit noted that such drugs require continuity to continue suppressing the effects of HIV and any discontinuity could mean disaster to the patients.
“We call upon the USA President to rethink the move and atleast spare some critical areas like health, stopping some health provisions would be too costly to human life we also appeal to Trump to also consider scaling the aid gradually as opposed to abrupt halt which will shock the established systems,” Ole Sapit said
He added that even as Trump shuts down or scales down help to Africa and other third world countries it is also a wakeup call to Africa including Kenya to re think about their expenditure, priorities and financial management.
“Moat African countries gained independent 50 years ago and are still dependent on Aid from abroad, yet we boast the best agricultural land, minerals and so on, how again do we depend on aid, we need to rethink about this and this shut down is an eye opener, we call for proper management of public resources” Ole Sapit said
The Archbishop further told reporters that countries like Kenya need to build capacity for her citizens and fight greed and corruption which is putting us on the borrowing table.
“We have become a people who want to amass everything to ourselves forgetting that one time we shall vacate the Earth, we would rather vacate the earth when we have left it a better place, I therefore call this USA disruption of aid as a wakeup call to the recipients.“Ole Sapit noted.
The aid halt has seen the special police forces deployed by Kenya to quell Haiti gangs affected and are feared to be enroute home following the support withdrawal by the USA.
Trump America first policy has seen has seen in excess of 6.5 billion dollars’ worth of aid to Sub Saharan Africa halted following his signing of several executive orders after taking over the White house.
The money helped Africa and other nations in the world in funding education, disease control and vaccination, free school lunch programmes and other development areas like agriculture and technology where America is the biggest donor.
Ole Sapit was speaking in St Paul University in Limuru during the launch of center for Anglican women leadership and research.
