Tea factories earn Sh1.2b at Mombasa weekly auction

Smallholder tea factories earned Sh1.19 billion from the auction of 4.47 million kilogrammes (kilos) of green tea to 65 local and international buyers.

Ngere Tea Factory in Murang’a was ranked the highest producer after the delivery of 207,856 kilos which earned it Sh55.08 million, followed by Mununga at Sh46.53 million from the sale of 125,410 kilos.

The report from the Mombasa Tea Auction indicates that the 10 top factories in the sale were Mununga, Gathuthi, Rukuriri, Imenti, Githongo, Ndima, Kathangariri, Kionyo, Kiegoi, and Gitugi.

Boito Factory in the Rift Valley sold 71,226 kilos of tea fetching Sh11.11 million. A kilo of tea from Boito was sold at Sh156.

Ngere Tea Factory Chairman James Githinji attributed the good performance to production of quality green leaf.

“At the factory, we have a dedicated team of competent staff who work with the board of directors to take the best at the auction market, said Githinji, who is also a KTDA board member in zone two.

KTDA Holding Chairman Enos Njeru said the local tea has attracted the international tea market following the production of the quality tea.

Njeru revealed that in the west of the rift, KTDA recognised the efforts made to improve the production of quality green leaf.

“In the market, factories in the west that did better are Momul, which fetched Sh19.2 million after the sale of 72,600kgs. Others are Tebesonisk, Nyankoba, and Motigo, among others,” he said Njeru.

East African Tea Traders Association Managing Director Daniel Omuga said the Mombasa Tea Auction auctioned 11.08 million kilos of tea, where Kenya presented 9.18 million kilos
Omuga noted that Uganda presented 1,140,120 kg, Rwanda 604,068 kg, Tanzania 59,408kg, Burundi 67,538 kg, and Mozambique 22,558 kilos.

“In the market, there were 56 tea buyers, with the global tea and commodities lead buying 20,560 kg,” said Omuga.

In the report, KTDA backed Chai Trading 14,040kg, Aditya Birla Global 13,340kg, L.A.B. International 11,040kg and James Finlay 10,580kg, among others.
Riotana trading bought 20kg.
