The Association of Scrap Metal Dealers has called on Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja to intervene in what they describe as harassment by county officers targeting licensed scrap metal dealers.
The dealers claim that a team from the Environment Department has been visiting scrap metal yards, demanding to see licenses, soliciting bribes, and making arbitrary arrests.
Evans Nganga, the National Chairman of the Scrap Metal Dealers Association, stated that members have consistently complied with county requirements.
‘’We normally receive memos from the county of any licenses due to be paid, which our members gladly pay through our office,” he said, adding; ‘’This time, enforcement officers from the environment department are making arbitrary arrests of our members and demanding very hefty bribes. Yesterday, they even arrested a sick member without any remorse.”
While lauding Sakaja’s efforts to clean and decongest the streets, the association has called for the arrest of the officials involved in demanding bribes.
‘’We believe in working in an environment that's free from harassment and extortion. My kind request is you look into this issue and a possible amicable solution,’’ he said.
