Residents of Vihiga County are set to benefit from increased access to affordable green energy, following a joint investment of Sh50 million by the County Government and the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC).
The investment, part of REREC’s Matching Fund Programme, aims to accelerate the rollout of clean and reliable electricity across the region.
The agreement was formalized through the signing of a new Collaboration Framework between REREC Chief Executive Officer Dr Rose Mkalama and Vihiga Governor Dr Wilber Ottichilo.
Each party will contribute Sh25 million to support transformative energy projects with a strong focus on solar-powered solutions.
“This partnership is a bold step toward achieving energy sustainability. We are committed to ensuring that every resident of Vihiga has access to modern, clean energy,” said Dr. Mkalama during the signing ceremony.
The initiative will prioritize the solarization of key public facilities, including boreholes, health centers, markets, and water schemes.
The plan also includes the installation of solar-powered high-mast lights in markets to enhance safety and boost economic activity after dark.
Additionally, the partnership will promote clean cooking solutions such as energy-saving stoves and biogas systems for households.
Plans are also underway to establish solar villages in remote areas to further expand energy access.
“These projects aim to bridge the energy access gap while promoting environmental conservation,” Dr. Mkalama added.
A major highlight of the agreement is the establishment of an Energy Center in the county. The facility will serve as a hub for capacity building and knowledge transfer, nurturing local expertise in renewable energy technologies.
Dr. Mkalama noted that REREC’s expanded mandate includes leading Kenya’s transition to green energy, and the agency will continue to support counties like Vihiga in advancing rural electrification and renewable energy adoption.
“This collaboration marks a new chapter in our efforts to combat climate change while improving lives. It aligns perfectly with our county’s vision for sustainable development,” said Governor Ottichilo.
The meeting also explored Vihiga’s potential entry into carbon markets. Officials noted that the county’s investments in green energy position it to benefit from carbon credit trading—providing both environmental and financial returns.
