School cedes 20 acres of land for KMTC, affordable housing project

Malindi High School board, local leaders and residents have allowed the institution to give up 20 acres of land for Sh2.3 billion affordable housing project and Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC).

The board approved 10 acres of land out of the over 70 acres owned by the institution for the housing project and another 10 acres for the college.

The resolution was made during public participation organised by the area MP Amina Mnyazi, Kilifi CEC Health Peter Mwarogo, senior officials from the State Department of Housing, KMTC Kilifi Campus Principal among others at Kwa Vumbi grounds.

Among the benefits the school stands to gain include projects worth over 180 million which are aimed elevating it’s national status.

Mnyazi said that the projects will transform Malindi which does not have affordable housing project and medical training college.

She dismissed critics of the project saying Malindi cannot afford to lose such massive investments that will create job opportunities and transform the area.

Malindi High School board chairman Rashid Bakuli said that they fully approved the projects on the land which has do had any developments since 1960s.

However Bakuli revealed that they have set conditions including an official letter from the Ministry as an agreement.

The institution’s principal Kazungu Charo said that the project would impact positively on the transformation agenda.

Former Shella Ward MCA Kadenge Mwathethe was optimistic that the KMTC would benefit the community while the housing project was a national agenda that seeks to ensure Kenyans live in dignity.

Wanje Baya, a leader from Shela ward said that the projects will create job opportunities for youths.

The Principal of KMTC Kilifi Campus Alex Deche said that Malindi is the only constituency with no medical college and once the project kicks off, it will create economic opportunities for locals including investment in rental houses besides ensuring access to education.

In Makueni, he said that there are four medical training colleges and a fifth will open doors soon but in Kilifi there is only one medical college.

Officials from the State Department of Housing said that they will construct 576 houses with 12 blocks of five floors each.

They noted that the master plan they will have a social hall, kindergarten, swimming pool, level three hospital and modern cabro roads.

Further there would be three commercial blocks for rental.
