Sugarcane plantation razed in Angata Barrikoi is suspected arson

About six acres of sugarcane were destroyed in a suspected arson attack at around 10pm in Angata Barikkoi, Trans Mara South Sub-County, Narok County.

Ngendalel Location Chief Leonard Langat confirmed the incident, saying unknown individuals are believed to have set fire to the plantation, which belongs to Angata Sugar Factory.

"Unknown people are believed to have started the fire. Police are investigating the incident and have visited the scene. The area is, however, calm," said Langat.

The chief urged residents to shun sectional agitation and acts of violence that could disrupt peace, adding that peaceful coexistence begins by accepting harmony.

Efforts to obtain comment from the management of the factory were unsuccessful.

The incident comes just days after deadly unrest in the area.

On Monday this week, five people were killed and several others injured during violent clashes between residents and police over a disputed 10,000-acre parcel of land, allegedly linked to a senior government official.

Tensions have been mounting over the ownership of the Angata Barikkoi/Moyoi land, with protests turning violent after police attempted to disperse protesters.
