Over 900 learners from Rarieda benefit from Sh11.8 million bursary

Over 900 learners from Rarieda constituency on Tuesday benefited from Sh11.8 million in bursaries from the National Government-Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF).

Area MP Otiende Amollo said the fund targeted students from all the five wards in the constituency. 

Speaking during the distribution of cheques and public participation for the NG-CDF, the lawmaker said the beneficiaries will receive at least Sh4,000.

He advised parents not to rely fully on bursaries from the government but to also engage in income-generating activities to enable them to meet their children’s educational expenses without constraints.

Otiende, who also took time to explain the NG-CDF amendment bill, said they opted to conduct the public participation because it is not entrenched in the constitution.

"Our party leader Raila Odinga called for implementation of the NADCO report which proposed to entrench the NG-CDF in the constitution. That is the reason we are doing this in order for it not to be challenged," said Otiende.

The lawmaker, who is also the sponsor of the bill, argued that abolishing the fund would return the country to the dark days, where leaders had to beg the president to get development.

"The NADCO report also proposed the allocation to counties to be increased from 15 per cent to 35 per cent. This should be implemented and allow the national government to also implement its programmes through the National Government Constituency Fund (NG-CF)," said the MP.

He added that they have removed the development part from it to allow the MPs tdo their oversight, legislation and representation role.

The MP also asked students to be disciplined and to study hard in order to perform well and better their future.

The MP was accompanied by the Rarieda NG-CDF Fund Accounts Manager Kennedy Chacha, who said they also disbursed Sh1.2 million Uwezo funds to 22 groups, with each group getting between Sh50, 000 and Sh100, 000.
