Police detectives investigating the murder of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were have recovered the pistol used in the fatal shooting.
According to Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, a ballistic study identified the Sarsilmaz pistol used to fire five bullets that killed Were.
“The ballistic report we have received unequivocally links the Sarsilmaz pistol, recovered from the residence of one of the suspects, to the fatal shots that took his life,” said Kanja.
He added that the pistol was involved in other criminal activities, including at least three robberies in Nairobi and Kiambu. One robbery occurred just four days before Were’s murder.
The pistol was found in a house in Kayole, where two suspects were also in possession of a Retay Falcon pistol.
Forensic experts from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are studying key evidence to build a strong case against the ten suspects in custody. Other exhibits include bullets retrieved from Were’s body and car during an autopsy on May 2, as well as CCTV footage, suspect vehicle details, and financial transactions.
“These exhibits are undergoing forensic analysis to further strengthen the case and clarify the circumstances surrounding Hon. Were's murder,” added Kanja.
According to Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, the investigation will also establish the motive of the killing.
"It is too early to speculate about the motive but at least from the update, with regards to firearms, it is clear it is the same gun used in shooting the MP," he said.
The murder suspects, including four directly linked to the scene of the crime, are expected to appear in court at JKIA Law Court today morning, May 8.
One of the suspects, businessman Philip Aroko, is the latest to surrender to the DCI.
Meanwhile, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo said the investigators are putting pieces together to solve the puzzle of the motive behind the killing.
