At least ten people have died in a road crash involving a 14-seater matatu and a lorry in the Arimi area along the Njoro-Molo road on Thursday evening.

One survivor, John Mureithi, reported that he was traveling from Nyahururu to Molo in the lorry when the accident occurred.

"From a distance, we noticed that the matatu had a tire burst. The driver was unable to control it, and the matatu crashed into the lorry. I escaped without injuries, but the lorry driver was among those hurt," said Mureithi.

First responders, including Elburgon Ward representative Njuguna Mwaura, indicated that several other passengers had been rushed to the hospital.

"This is a tragic evening. The matatu has been destroyed due to the impact. I have counted about ten bodies, including that of a high school student whose body has just been recovered from the wreckage," said Njuguna.

It is suspected that the matatu suffered brake failure as it was traveling downhill, causing it to roll on the road.

"The impact was so severe that some bodies were mutilated. The survivors have been taken to Molo Hospital," Njuguna added.

Members of the Kenya Red Cross also responded to the scene and helped retrieve bodies trapped inside the wreckage.

According to Njuguna, the design and current condition of the road may have contributed to the severity of the accident.

"We urge KeNHA to reconsider the design of this section of the road. There are several bends downhill without appropriate signage. The tire burst may have also resulted from the deep potholes that are difficult to avoid at high speeds," stated Njuguna.

The bodies of the deceased have been transported to Molo Sub-County Mortuary.
