Naivasha Member of Parliament, Jayne Kihara, has accused President William Ruto of orchestrating political persecutions against allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua after her security was withdrawn on Wednesday.
According to the MP, the police officer attached to her was recalled and disarmed despite every legislator being entitled to round the clock government protection.
MP Kihara says she fears for her life, especially in light of the killing of former Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were in cold blood, last month.
“I feel so vulnerable now. I feel so naked,” said the MP.
“Should anything happen to me, Ruto, our president, you are to blame. So, Mr. President, please, please give me back my security officer or my bodyguard. I'm a very small person to be fought with that kind of a big punch. I think it's not fair,” she added.
The staunch Gachagua ally has further called out President Ruto for walking back on his promise to not use state power against opponents adding that no intimidation would cause her to change her political affiliations.
“I'm calling on the president because he was all over the campaign saying that he will never use security forces to advance his politics,” she lamented.
She added: “Being Gachagua’s friend is not a crime. I’m not a baby. I’m not a fool. I can make my own decisions like I did when I supported Dr William Samoei Ruto. I was all over campaigning for him when we exited the Jubilee Party. It’s the same thing happening now.”
The lawmaker's plea comes barely a week after former DP Gachagua raised concerns over his security and alleged planned state targeting of politicians loyal to him.
Kiharu's sense of vulnerability resonates among the legislators. National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula advised the MPs, following the murder of MP Were, to revamp their security.
The MP finds herself in a dilemma as her role involves movement including trips to meet constituents and to attend to parliamentary duties in Nairobi.
“So I don't know what, how we are supposed to operate, whether we are supposed to have goons in the cars with pangas and rungus.”
