Albert Ojwang's family defends Ruto's Sh2m donation

The family of the late Albert Ojwang’ has lauded President William Ruto for personally reaching out to console them and donate money to them following the blogger's mysterious death in police custody.

Family spokesperson Harman Opiyo said the President acted responsibly, as a father of the nation, by calling Meshack Ojwang’, the father of the deceased, and offering his condolences.

“President Ruto saw it necessary to comfort us, and as a family, we appreciate this gesture. It is his responsibility as a national leader to show concern,” Opiyo said.

The President also donated Sh2 million to support the grieving family.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga also phoned the family to express his sympathy over the tragic death.

Albert, the only child of Mzee Ojwang’, was arrested on June 7 from his rural home in Homa Bay by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), allegedly over spreading misinformation. He was transported to Nairobi and detained at Central Police Station. The following morning, he was found dead under unclear circumstances.

Speaking to the media in Nyawango, Homa Bay, Opiyo said the family is devastated and is now focused on seeking justice.

“We are heartbroken. Our wish is for justice to be served. We have given the government space to conduct investigations and we urge them to fast-track the process so we can know the truth behind Albert’s death,” Opiyo stated.

Regarding burial plans, Opiyo said the family has not set a date. “We are waiting for the investigations to be completed before we can proceed with burial arrangements,” he said.

They made the comments even as a section of Kenyans criticized the father for allegedly siding with oppressors by accepting their monetary gifts.
