Family identifies unconscious man dumped in Ruaka

A suspected abduction victim whose photos went viral today morning has been identified as Jackson Njuguna Wambui by his family.

Photos of the unconscious man were widely shared after he was found dumped in the Ruaka area of Nairobi and later taken to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) for treatment.

According to eye witness accounts, and family statements, Njuguna had visible signs of torture pointing to a harrowing ordeal in the hands of the perpetrators.

His medical condition remains critical.

“Our kin is not in a stable condition, he is very bad. He is in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). He was found in Ruaka having been beaten. We are saddened as a family,” said Joyce Njuguna, his aunt.

Jackson’s family says that they were with him on Sunday, June 29.

Further, Joyce revealed that Jackson was not a blogger and had not taken part in the recent protests even as most reported abduction cases appear to mainly involve government critics.

According to his family, Jackson is a regular trader who sells clothes in Ruaka adding that the motive for the attack remains a mystery to them.

They have however condemned some hospitals who they accused of turning the unconscious man away even when it was clear that he was fighting for his life.

“Officers at Ruaka Police Station directed us to the Aga Khan hospital but he was not there. We were sent to Kiambu Hospital but were told they didn’t take him in. He was later taken to KNH where he is,”said Joyce.

“We demand justice for Jack,” she added.

Initially, the man was mistaken for Ndiang'ui Kinyangia, an advocate and X influencer who has been missing for eleven days after publishing a program for the June 25 memorial protests. The program included events interpreted as a call for unconstitutional regime change.

Yesterday, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations denied holding the activist but confirmed that it was pursuing the activist to aid an ongoing investigation.
