Seychelles' former VP Meriton drops AUC bid, endorses Raila

Former Seychelles Vice President Vincent Meriton has withdrawn his candidacy for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship in favor of Kenyan leader Raila Odinga. 

Announcing his decision on Saturday, November 30, Meriton stated, “I withdrew my candidacy from the African Union Commission chairmanship race because I would not have been able to withstand the pressure that comes with the position.” 

In a show of solidarity, Meriton pledged his support for Odinga, whom he described as the ideal candidate for the role.

"Today, I want to lend my support to Raila Odinga. As Africa positions itself to be more assertive on the international scene, we need new leadership at the African Union Commission." 

Meriton emphasized that the race is not about rivalry but about choosing the continent's best leader.

"I admire the drive and passion that Odinga has. His long years of experience are what the continent needs as we take our rightful place. With Raila Odinga, we can only succeed." 

With Meriton stepping aside, Odinga now faces three opponents: Richard Mahitsison of Madagascar, Anil Gayan of Mauritius, and his key rival, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf of Djibouti. 

The former Prime Minister is currently on a continental tour, campaigning on his vision for the African Union, with less than three months remaining until the election.
