AU Commission calls for cessation of hostilities in DRC

African Union Commission chairperson Moussa Faki, has raised alarm over the worsening security and humanitarian crisis in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). 

In a statement issued on January 25, 2025, from Addis Ababa, Faki expressed deep concern about the escalating tensions, which threaten the peace efforts under the Luanda process led by Angolan President Joao Manuel Lourenço.

Faki called for strict adherence to the ceasefire agreements and an immediate cessation of hostilities. 

He urged all parties involved to prioritize the safety of civilians and reiterated his unwavering support for initiatives aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict between the DRC and Rwanda, as well as between the Congolese government and political-military opposition groups.

“The African Union is committed to ensuring peace and stability in the region. I urge the international community to mobilize all possible support for the affected populations,” Faki said.

The conflict in eastern DRC has displaced thousands  and caused significant loss of life, raising concerns about regional stability.
