A fire that broke out on Wednesday night at the University of Nairobi's Taifa Hall, caused significant damage to two structures in the Mahatma Gandhi wing.
Speaking on the aftermath on Thursday, January 16, Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Francis Mulaa explained that the fire engulfed the senior common room and the chancellor's parlor, which are adjacent structures within the affected wing.
"We had a fire incident at the Gandhi wing of the University of Nairobi, specifically the senior common room, which then spread to the chancellor’s parlor. The fire was intense and completely consumed both structures," Prof. Mulaa said.
He attributed the rapid spread of the fire to the materials used in the construction of the buildings.
"Most of the structure is made of old timber, which contributed to the fire's acceleration. These are historical buildings, dating back to around 1963 when the university was established," he added.

Prof. Mulaa commended the Nairobi County Fire Services and police officers for their swift response, which prevented the fire from spreading further.
He also acknowledged Kenya Power's efforts in cutting off electricity supplies within the institution to minimise damage.
No fatalities were reported, but the university has begun assessing the extent of the damage caused by the fire.
