Veteran journalist Mutegi Njau has died, his family has confirmed.

“It is with profound sadness that we inform you of the passing of our dad. He left us peacefully on the evening of June 27, 2024, at 7.00pm,” reads part of a statement.

The family says it has lost a cherished figure the community will miss.

“Dad was a remarkable man whose generosity, sense of humour, and dedication to his career left a lasting impact on everyone he met.”

The gentle and soft-spoken journalist began his career in 1979 and worked with several media houses in Kenya including Royal Media Services (RMS).

Mutegi was known for his insightful political analysis on ‘Cheche’ and ‘Power Breakfast’ morning shows on Citizen TV, which he co-hosted alongside David Makali and Uduak Amimo.

“I am devastated by the passing of a senior colleague, co-host, and panelist, Mutegi Njau. May your toil on this earth be rewarded and your memory last forever among those you mentored and gifted, or who savoured your goodness,” wrote Makali, on X.

RMS Editorial Director, Linus Kaikai, also mourned the veteran journalist as a ‘fierce newsroom lion’ and a consummate lifetime scribe.
