Brace for more heavy rains, weatherman warns

The Kenya Meteorological Department has predicted continued rainfall across the Central Rift Valley, Central Kenya, Southeastern lowlands, and Nairobi.

In a weekly advisory, Kenya MET Director David Gikungu stated that areas within these regions could see rainfall exceeding 20mm, with intensities reaching over 30mm in 24 hours on Friday, November 15. 

Counties likely to experience above-average rainfall include Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Nyeri, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Isiolo, Nakuru, Kericho, Bomet, Narok, parts of Kajiado, Nairobi, Machakos, Kitui, and Makueni.

Residents in these areas are advised to prepare for potential flash floods. 

Those living along downstream and seasonal rivers are urged to remain alert for possible floodwaters from higher elevations.

The long rains are expected to reduce across much of the country starting next week.

Authorities have advised the public to avoid driving or walking through moving water and to stay away from open fields, trees, and grilled windows during storms to reduce the risk of lightning strikes.

Those living in landslide-prone areas, especially on the slopes of the Aberdare Range, Mount Kenya, and other hilly regions, are encouraged to remain vigilant.
