Ex-DIG Gabow refutes claims of police quitting Haiti Mission

Kenya's Consul-General nominee to Port-au-Prince, Haiti General Noor Gabow has refuted reports speculating that some of the Kenya police officers have quit the Haiti Mission.

Gabow who appeared before the National Assembly's Committee on Defence, Intelligence, and Foreign Relations for vetting, termed the claims as unfounded adding that the officers are doing a good job in restoring peace and stability in Haiti.

"Our officers are being paid, no officer has left and they are doing an excellent job. Kindly ignore the rumors being spread on social media. I have gone there four times and I can confirm that the officers have covered a bigger area," he stated.

Gabow, a former Deputy Inspector of Police also stated that if confirmed, he will be domiciled in Port-au-Prince where 30 other countries have already set up their embassies.

Security experts say Gabow's nomination is strategic considering that Kenya is leading a multinational security mission to restore stability in the Caribbean nation.

The nominee was also tasked to explain what transpired at the Bomas of Kenya on August 15, 2022, considering that he was the lead officer in charge of the venue (national tallying centre).

In his defence, he admitted his responsibility as he defended security at the venue stating that he was even awarded for his leadership during the tense period.

“It is true that I was in charge of Bomas and I want to tell the members that I received the Undugu Award for peace,” he said.
