CJ Koome mourns Senior Counsel Pheroze Nowrojee

Chief Justice Martha Koome led the legal fraternity in eulogizing Senior Counsel Pheroze Nowrojee, terming him as an icon in the legal profession.

Through a press statement, Koome noted the late through his distinguished life in the court, adding that he made an immense contribution to the development of the country’s judiciary.

“He was the conscience of our profession. His life was the very definition of what it means to defend the rule of law with courage and humility,” she said.

The Chief Justice highlighted Nowrojee’s immense contributions to the development of Kenyan jurisprudence, noting that his work, including landmark cases and scholarly writings, will continue to guide future generations of legal practitioners.

“He stood with courage during Kenya’s darkest times. Using the law as a shield for the vulnerable, and a sword against injustice,” Koome added.

“To many of us in the legal profession, Senior Counsel Pheroze Nowrojee was simply ‘Mwalimu’—our teacher, our mentor, our conscience,” she said, adding that he believed deeply in the transformative potential of the Constitution and devoted his life to actualizing its promise.

Nowrojee passed on April 5 in the United States at 84.
