Madaraka Day preparations in top gear - PS Omollo says

Preparations for this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations are in full swing, with Interior Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo leading the National Celebrations Steering Committee on an inspection tour of key facilities in Homa Bay County.

Thursday's visit focused on the ongoing upgrades at Raila Odinga Stadium, the official venue for the national event scheduled for June 1. 

The stadium, now expanded to accommodate 12,000 people, is undergoing final touches through a collaborative effort between the national and county governments.

Speaking during the tour, Dr. Omollo lauded the teamwork between the various government entities involved. 

“The most strategic parts of what Kenya is doing will be ready ahead of Madaraka Day. We invite Kenyans from all corners of the country to join us in Homa Bay for these historic celebrations,” Omollo stated.

This year’s celebrations will spotlight the Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs, marked by a three-day conference that will engage lake basin communities, beach management units, development partners, and the business community. 

Deputy President Kithure Kindikia will open the conference, followed by Prime Cabinet Secretary Dr. Musalia Mudavadi on the second day. President William Ruto is expected to close the forum on the final day.

Beyond the stadium, Homa Bay is experiencing a major infrastructure boost. The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) and Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) are set to commence roadworks on key access routes, with contracts to be finalized by the end of the week. 

The Kenya Airports Authority has already upgraded Kabunde Airstrip, with further enhancements underway, including work on a new terminal and apron.

Kenya Power is advancing street lighting projects, while the county government is increasing water supply to key venues and surrounding residential areas.
