Details have now emerged that the man who allegedly killed a General Service Unit (GSU) officer at State House pretended to be mentally ill and posed as a street dweller.

The revelations came to light when Kithuka Kimunyi Musyimi, the suspect behind the killing of a GSU officer at State House, was arraigned before the Kibera Law Courts, where police sought 14 days to continue holding him to complete investigations.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Musyimi had travelled from Makueni County on Sunday night before he committed the offence.

The court heard that on Monday morning at around 8:10 am approached the State House Gate D along Dennis Pritt Road pretending to be mentally unstable before launching the deadly attack.

“The man approached the State House Gate D along Dennis Pritt Road appearing to be mentally unstable and when asked by the GSU officer manning the gate to leave, that is when the suspect charged and attacked the officers,” Investigation Officer Inspector Bashir Boya told the court.

The court heard that Musyimi released two arrows, one of which missed, while the second fatally struck Constable Ramadhan Khamisi Matanka, a GSU officer manning the security barrier.

In an affidavit filed in court, detectives allege that the suspect had concealed the bow and arrows in a blue sack, posing as a street dweller before attacking the officers.

“He was armed with a bow and arrows that he had concealed in a blue sack, posing as a street dweller, and advanced towards a GSU officers manning the search barrier, including one Matanka,” the court heard.

Inspector Boya added that the suspect shot Officer Matanka on the left side of his chest.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that at around 0810 hours, the respondent, who was armed with a bow and arrows that he had concealed in a sack, taking cover behind a vehicle that was undergoing security check-up, suddenly drew the bow and released an arrow shot on him, injuring him on the left side of his chest and causing him serious injuries,” Boya stated.

Constable Matanka was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), where he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.

The court was further informed that Musyimi was arrested on October 13, 2025, along Dennis Pritt Road near State House Gate D.

Boya opposed the suspect’s release on bail or bond, arguing that he had no known residence in Nairobi and was therefore a flight risk.

“The suspect has no known place of abode and we do not know where he works. Thus, he is a flight risk. We are apprehensive that if released on bond he might abscond court, thereby jeopardizing the ongoing investigations,” IP Boya told the court.

The DCI is seeking time to record witness statements and retrieve CCTV footage from State House Gate D and Dennis Pritt Road.

“We need to get a profile, lift fingerprints and forward them to the Criminal Records Office to ascertain the respondent’s criminal record, escort the suspect to Kenyatta National Hospital for mental assessment, and conduct an autopsy on the deceased to ascertain the cause of death,” the officer added.

Musyimi did not oppose the DCI’s request for continued detention but urged the court to order that he be taken to hospital for treatment, citing injuries, including one on his leg.

Consequently, Kibera Principal Magistrate Christine Njagi granted the DCI’s request to continue holding Musyimi at Kilimani Police Station pending completion of investigations.

“I am satisfied that the application by the prosecution has merit. The respondent shall be detained for 14 days at Kilimani Police Station to allow investigators to complete their inquiries,” the magistrate ruled.

She further directed that Musyimi, who appeared sickly and could hardly walk due to injuries on his left leg and face, be taken to hospital for immediate medical attention.

“The respondent should be taken to Mbagathi Hospital without delay for treatment on his leg before he is taken back to the police station,” the magistrate directed.

The case will be mentioned on October 28, 2025.
