Five people died on the spot after they were hit by a lorry transporting maize at Mabera along the Migori-Isebania highway.
A witness said the driver lost control of the lorry on Sunday night, hitting five pedestrians, including two teachers.
Kuria West Sub-County Police Commander Reuben Bett said the five pedestrians were crossing Ragana Bridge when the accident occurred.
“The pedestrians were on foot. There is an incomplete footbridge, but many people pass where the road is,” Mr Bett said.

He said the lorry that was headed to Migori from Isebania, overturned on the bridge. The driver and conductor of the lorry were rushed to different hospitals in critical condition.
The five bodies were removed to St Akidiva Mirindi Hospital’s morgue for autopsy. Bett said the scene of the accident was a black spot.
“The bridge is narrow and there is no provision for pedestrians,” said Bett, who cautioned drivers to be cautious when travelling in the area.
Residents said that the two teachers worked at a nearby school.
Richard Chacha, a resident, asked the Ministry of Transport to inspect the road, which was incomplete.
“We are very sad to have lost two teachers. We want the contractor to come and complete this road because this is the fourth accident we are having here,” Chacha said.
Celina Bhoke, another resident, asked the government to erect bumps in the road.
“We have lost our teacher because of this road. School-going children from this area are also not safe,” said Ms Bhoke, adding that residents demand swift action to avert the frequent accidents.
A week ago, a bus overturned, killing one person on the spot.
Two days later, several people escaped with serious injuries after vehicle they were travelling in overturned near the bridge.
