Herder killed as bandits steal 18 cows, 30 goats in Angata Barikkoi

Tension remains high in Angata Barikkoi, Transmara South Sub-county, following the killing of one person and theft of livestock by suspected bandits from neighbouring Migori County.

The attack took place in the Keturo area around 6:30 PM, during which bandits opened fire and shot a man ten times in the leg before fleeing with 18 cows and 30 goats.

Angata Sub-location Chief Kennedy Bowen confirmed the attack.

"I received calls from residents reporting that bandits had struck in the Keturo area, resulting in one death and the theft of animals. Upon arriving at the scene, I heard gunfire as security personnel engaged the bandits. Unfortunately, they were unable to recover the stolen animals, but they are currently pursuing the attackers. Tension remains high in the area,” Bowen stated.

The deceased has been identified as Charles Langat, a member of the Kilgoris Municipal Board, who was herding his animals at the time of the attack.

Bowen urged local residents to remain calm and avoid any retaliatory actions, assuring them that the government is committed to recovering the stolen livestock.

"I urge our residents to stay calm. The government will address the long-standing issue of banditry in the area," he said.

Bowen further reassured the community, stating, "As national government administration officers, we promise the residents that we will handle this issue promptly."

He emphasised that those involved in such criminal activities will be held accountable.

Last month, bandits suspected to be from Kuria East Sub-county struck Kiribwet village in Chelchel Sub-location and stole 13 animals belonging to Isaiah Maritim, which have not yet been recovered.

Area Member of County Assembly (MCA) Joseph Koech Tekeltich called on the government to conduct security operations aimed at eliminating banditry.

He highlighted the frequent occurrences of cattle rustling and bandit attacks as serious concerns for the community.

"Residents are tired of banditry and living in fear and are seeking a lasting solution to this menace," Koech expressed.

He urged the national government to demonstrate a commitment to fighting banditry in the region, citing ongoing insecurity as a pressing issue.
