Political tensions between Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga and Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo have escalated as protests erupted in parts of Nyanza against Wanga for allegedly undermining the PS.

Although the two leaders have not castigated each other in public, their supporters believe there is an ongoing feud between them as the fight for supremacy in Nyanza continues.

For the last two days, groups allied to Omollo have staged protests in Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori and Siaya counties to protest against Wanga.

On Tuesday, a section of Kisumu County residents held a protest against Governor Wanga in support of Omollo. A similar demonstration was also held by Omollo’s supporters in Migori Town on Wednesday to castigate Wanga over her poor relationship with Omollo.

In Homa Bay Town, the youth league of the UDA party held a press conference on Wednesday and criticised Wanga over what they termed as her bad relationship with Omollo.

Led by UDA youth leader Kevin Odhiambo, the youth expressed dissatisfaction with what they termed as a silent war between Wanga and Omollo.

Odhiambo said it is needless for any leader who joined the broad-based government to fight the leaders they found in government.

“As young people, we are not happy that some ODM leaders who joined the broad-based government are now fighting the Luo leaders they found in the government. The war between Governor Wanga and Dr Omollo should stop,” Odhiambo said.

Odhiambo called for respect between the two leaders so that the people can benefit.

UDA’s Michael Kojo said the tension is causing unnecessary division in the Nyanza region.

“I appeal to our political leaders who are in the broad-based government to serve interests of the people. Let them respect each other and work in harmony to enable residents to benefit from development,” Kojo said.

Achieng Okombo said the national government projects done in Homa Bay County should not cause a supremacy battle between the two leaders.

“The National Government has done a lot of projects in this county because of our leaders who are in the government. Let these projects not cause wrangles over who lobbied for their implementation,” Okombo said.

Wanga’s allies held a press conference in Homa Bay Town where they castigated Omollo for disregarding Wanga.

Led by ODM Chairperson in Rangwe Constituency, Caroline Owidhi, and Homa Bay Town Central MCA Monoflorita Ondiek, the group defended Wanga, saying such demonstrations are unnecessary.

Owidhi said Omollo should concentrate on his work in the National Government. She said the demonstrations held in various parts of Nyanza were uncalled for.

“We are challenging him to concentrate on his work in the National Government. Let him stop the demonstrations we have seen in various parts of Nyanza,” Owidhi said.

The Organising Secretary of ODM in Homa Bay Town Constituency, Synod Okello, also accused Omollo of engaging in a misplaced battle.
