When Iddah Awuor was admitted to Moi Suba Girls three years ago, she did not imagine that one day, she’d be the darling of the school in athletics.
Awuor will be representing her school next month in Mombasa when the KSSSA National Term One games begin at Shanzu Training Teachers College.
Awuor defied all odds to qualify for the national finals after finishing second in triple jump during the Nyanza Region Secondary School games.
“I had nothing to lose at the regionals. My confidence was high and with the support I received from the school, I took it upon myself to reward the trust bestowed to me,” said Awuor.

“My goal is to replicate the same performance in Mombasa, if not better because I am motivated with the fact that despite coming from a little-known school, I have proven that success in sports knows no boundaries.”
Her coach Wycliff Juma said they are proud of Awuor and they are dreaming of qualifying for the East Africa games.
“This is the first time we are taking any discipline to the nationals. She has done the school proud and showed other students that with hard work, anything is possible. The goal now remains East Africa. I trust in her,” said Juma.
Meanwhile, Nyanza Region will be keen to do better in cross country at the nationals with schools from Kisii and Nyamira confident of toppling the ever dominant Rift Valley schools. Dorcas Isoe from Keberesi Girls of Kisii County will be keen to improve her time of 19:19.345 that won her the regional 6km cross country title, while Antony Omworo from Masogo also from Kisii will hope to better his 8km cross county time of 24:07.51.
Mary Nyaboke (19:30.75), Ruth Ondara (21:04.83) from Keberesi and Rioga of Nyamira respectively will join Isoe in the 6km race alongside Cynthia Isoe (21:11.96), Purity Moraa (21:17.78) and Pacifica Gasairo (21:18.65). [Washington Onyango]
