St Mary’s School Yala is a school on a mission.
After a mixed and disappointing run during the KSSSA Term One games, where they failed to reach the national finals played at Shanzu in Mombasa, Yala are keen to do better as the Term Two games continue to build towards the climax.
Yala were crowned champions in football, basketball 3x3, volleyball, rugby sevens and racquets during the Gem Yala Sub County Secondary School Sports Association (GYSCSSSA) Term two games finals played over the weekend.
Commonly known for their prowess in rugby, Yala swept all the title in all categories played, qualifying for the Siaya County finals set to be played on June 19th.
Speaking to the Standard Sports, Yala Games Master Peter Ojwala said the school is confident of dominating the games at the county level, this term going for every category.

“The Gem Yala Sub County games was a success and opener to the players and administration that with good preparations, excellence is very easy to achieve.
“Many know Yala as a rugby power house but we want to show the nation that we can also play good football, good volleyball and basketball,” said Ojwala.
Yala hammered Uranga 3-0 to win the boy’s final while Sinaga Girls had to wait until penalties to edge Uranga 5-4 in post-match penalties after having played 0-0 in regular time to win the girls category.
In Volleyball boys, Yala hammered Sawagongo 3-0 to emerge champions as Sinaga Girls edged out Nyamninia in the girls' final.
In rugby sevens, Yala, who are the KSSSA national bronze medalists, saw off Sawagongo 19-0.
Yala Principal Victor Makanda promised more support to the boys as they work towards ensuring the school does well not only in academics but also in co-curricular activities.
“This Term we are ready. The school is hungry for success in sports just as we are always in academics. These boys are the future of Kenya, and I am glad to be part of their journey to the top,” said Makanda.
Yala football team last year lost 1-0 to arch rivals Ambira High School in the finals of the Siaya County games, a painful exit that they will be keen to beat this year as they target Nyanza regional finals.
