A section of youth from Busia have challenged Okiya Omtatah to resign as Senator and focus on activism.
They claim that Omtatah has failed to represent the interest of Busia residents as an elected leader and has instead shifted his attention to activism.
This comes barely a day after the Senator known for his numerous litigations was arrested in Nairobi alongside, human rights activists and youth demonstrating against rising abductions by alleged government agents.
Addressing journalists, the Busia Youth Caucus, threatened to recall the senator for allegedly failing to prioritise the mandate given to him by the people to champion and protect the interests of the county government.

“Senator Okiya Omtatah should step down as the Senator for Busia county. He has failed to live up to the expectations of his office and has lost the confidence of the people he represents. The people of Busia deserve a leader who will dedicate themselves to the duties and responsibilities of the Senate,” read the Press Statement.
The Caucus chairperson Emiliana Okotsi, claimed that Omtatah has fallen short of the people’s expectations to hold the Busia county government accountable and ensure that funds are used for development and service delivery.
“The Senator has chosen to immerse himself in endless activism and litigation, which appears to be aimed more at self-promotion and intimidation than at delivering meaningful change for the people of Busia,” she said.
The youth threatened to kick off the collection of signatures to recall the Senator if he fails to resign.
“Senator Omtatah should resign immediately. We, the youth of Busia, shall immediately kick off the collection of signatures to recall him in line with the Constitution of Kenya because Busia county faces critical challenges that require focused and dedicated leadership,” read the statement in part.
The youth maintained that they need a Senator who will fight for development, ensure accountability in the county, and work tirelessly to improve the lives of the people.
The caucus said Omtatah’s preoccupation with filing lawsuits and engaging in public theatrics has left a void in oversight of the county.
The senator has declared his presidential bid in the 2027 General Election.
