How NSSF is setting itself up as the trusted partner in social security

Established in 1965 through an Act of Parliament, the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) has been a cornerstone of social security in Kenya. NSSF has evolved from a department under the Ministry of Labor to a State Corporation governed by a Board of Trustees; with representation from the Government, the most representative workers’ association (COTU-K), and the most representative employer association (FKE).

Vision, Mission, and Core Values

At NSSF, our vision is ‘to be the trusted social security provider delivering exceptional value to our members’.

Our mission is ‘to empower our members to achieve financial security through prudent investments and value-adding solutions.’

Our Core Values within which we operate are ‘member-centricity, Integrity, innovation, and collaboration’.

Employer Obligations:

All employers must register with NSSF and ensure their employees do the same. Upon registration, employers are required to promptly deduct and remit contributions in full by the  9th of the following month.

To register your business/company, simply download the registration form from NSSF’s website: https://www.nssf.or.ke/, fill it and drop it off at your nearest NSSF office. Please ensure that you attach the following documents:

  • Certificate of Incorporation
  • Registration of Business Names
  • Trading License

Employee Obligations:

When you are first employed, all you would need is to visit any NSSF Office closest to you with:

  • Your original National Identity Card, Alien Card, or Passport.
  • An introduction letter from your employer

We will record your details and register you. You will then be issued with an NSSF membership card. Your employer will require the NSSF Number on your card to enable them to make contributions to your account.

Security of Contributions: Your contributions are secure with NSSF, guaranteed by the Government of Kenya. Our operations and finances are audited by the Auditor General, and we adhere to stringent oversight by the Retirement Benefits Authority. Transparency is ensured through Annual General Meetings and accessible member account information.
