Police are investigating an incident in which a couple abandoned a six-month-old Evans Mordecai at a hospital in Nairobi’s Eastleigh area.
The baby died at Edna Medical Centre where the parents had taken him on Wednesday for treatment following severe pneumonia.
John Shabana, a nurse at the facility told police the boy died while being treated. The father, identified as Isaac Kahenga, excused himself in search of money to clear the medical bill of KShs. 4,000.
The wife followed him out after a few minutes. The hospital management decided to call the couple after they failed to return but they could not be reached since their phones had been switched off.
Shabana decided to report the matter to the California Police Station as the boy’s body was being moved to the morgue.
A senior detective said on Thursday that they are trying to trace the couple. “We understand the man and his wife are poor and were unable to raise the money to clear the bill,” said the officer.
Meanwhile, four people died by suicide in separate incidences in Nairobi, Muranga, Nyeri, and Kilifi counties.
The body of Benson Mwangi Kabuiya, a resident of Tena estate, was found hanging from the rafters of his house. It is suspected that the 42-year-old used a piece of cloth to take his own life.
In the Gishagi village of Muranga, 54-year-old Antony Karugu is believed to have killed himself in his compound. His body was found dangling from a tree with a cable wire tied around the man’s neck.
Francis Mwangi Ngunyi, 64, took his own life at the Gakima village of Mukurweini, Nyeri County. His body was found dangling from an avocado tree on his farm. It had a sisal rope around the neck.
In Rabai, a sub-county in Kilifi, a partly decomposing body of 26-year-old Ramadhani Mkuzi Idi was found in his house dangling from the roof rafters with a piece of cloth tied around his neck.
Cases of people committing suicide have been on the rise attributed to mental issues, financial, family and marital issues.
Early this month, at least 13 people have died by suicide in the last four days in separate incidents reported to police across the country. These incidents highlight the urgent need for mental health awareness and support systems to prevent such tragedies.
