Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has been recognised as the East African Humanitarian Personality of the Year for his support to vulnerable groups.

In a Facebook post, Sonko said he was honoured by the award, which he dedicated to beneficiaries of the Sonko Rescue Team (SRT).

“This award is a true manifestation of the humanity work we have been undertaking to help the vulnerable and marginalised in our society,” said Sonko.

The award, conferred by E360 Entertainment, was presented during a gala night at Nairobi Cinema, on Sunday March 9, where Sonko’s media liaison officer, Nickko Nyamai, received it on his behalf.

SRT, launched during Sonko’s tenure as Nairobi senator, provides services such as ambulances, hearses, wedding transport, water distribution, and emergency response.

In 2024, SRT was among more than 2,800 non-governmental organisations facing deregistration for non-compliance with the Public Benefit Organisations Act, 2013.

Sonko, however, pledged to sustain its operations despite the regulatory threats.
